CEO of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios told the graduating class of Stanford College on July 12, 2005 that in order to be truly successful "you've got to find what you love."
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, gave a commencement on life stories. They were about connecting the dots, love and loss and death.
Jobs dropped out of college after one semester but continued to take courses that interested him. Ten years after he dropped out, he created the Mac computer.
"If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts," Jobs said.
He also said that you can't connect dots looking forward but you can only connect them looking backwards, and trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.
Jobs started Apple in his garage at the age of 20. After the company became a $2 billion dollar success, it was eventually taken over by the Board of Directors and Steve Jobs became jobless.
"What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating," Jobs said.
After five years of figuring out what to do, Steve Jobs created a company called neXt and Pixar. Pixar created the world's first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.
"Apple bought neXt, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at neXt is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance," Jobs said. "
He went on to say that you have to find what you love and if you have yet to find it, to keep looking. Jobs said not to settle on anything.
Steve Jobs, at the age of 33 was diagnosed with cancer and doctors said it was incurable. "Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose," Jobs said.
However, after a few tests the doctors found out his cancer was in fact curable, and he is healthy.
As Jobs finished his commencement to the graduating class at Stanford, he discussed his favorite publication called "The Whole Earth Catalog" and Jobs quoted it by saying "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."
