Roaring Creek Bridge

A ceremony was given this morning for the year’s progress in the rebuilding of a bridge over Roaring Creek that was taken out by a flood a year ago.

The Midville Mayor, Seth Montana, U.S. Congressman Nacy Draughorn and United States Senator Warren Johns were a few people who attended this morning’s service.

The 33-foot span bridge over Roaring Creek along Roaring Creek Road was 75 years old.

Roland Lively, head of the County Department of Transportation, said,” The Bridge was not in great shape when it was destroyed. We already had some money in the county budget for repairs. Problem was we didn’t have enough to replace the bride. We were just going to repair it. Fortunately, some state and federal money was available, and we were able to do it a lot quicker than we had expected.”

The entire bridge cost $700,000 to rebuild; the county paid $100,000, the state paid $200,000 and the U.S. Department of Transportation funds were $400,000.

When the bridge went out it created problems for the Oak Grove neighborhood because when the bridge was passable, the neighborhood was only about a mile away from Highway 19, a main route in Midville, where lots of people in the Oak Grove neighborhood work.

With the bridge out the neighborhood had to find other longer routes to work.

Josh Spiva, Oak Grove resident, “Traveling all that way has made it very inconvenient for a lot of people. We’ve had to use a lot of time and gasoline just to make what otherwise would be very short trips. Having this bridge erected so quickly is a blessing.”

The bridge has been up for a couple of weeks making all residents happier.
