Summary (informational): A new bridge opened across Roaring Creek after a flood destroyed the original bridge last year. Oak Grove residents can now avoid the inconvenience of traveling extra miles to Midville.
Summary (provocative): A heavy thunderstorm may cause the residents of Oak Grove to shake in their boots after a flood destroyed a bridge crossing over Roaring Creek last year. The new bridge officially opened today, and Oak Grovers pray it will be strong enough to withstand the forces of nature.
The new 33-foot bridge crossing over Roaring Creek officially opened during a ceremony this morning.
Midville Mayor Seth Montana, Rep. Nancy Draughorn and Sen. Warren Johns were in attendance.
A flood washed out the 75-year-old bridge last year, causing Oak Grove residents to travel an extra eight miles to get to Highway 19.
“We’ve had to use a lot of time and gasoline just to make what otherwise would be very short trips,” Oak Grove resident and attorney Josh Spiva said. “Having this bridge erected so quickly is a blessing.”
The county, state and U.S. Department of Transportation contributed to the funding of the $700,000 bridge.
- $100,000 from county
- $200,000 from state
- $400,000 from U.S. Department of Transportation
“We were just going to repair it," Roland Lively, head of the County Department of Transportation said. "Fortunately, some state and federal money was available, and we were able to do it a lot quicker than we had expected.”
Although the opening ceremony was held this morning, the bridge has been open for a couple of weeks.
