UT Students Want to Make Orange Green

Environmentally-friendly students and administrators kicked off the “Make Orange Green" campaign this month with a weeklong celebration to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Free food, live entertainment and various speakers were just a few of the events held Sept. 11-15, to educate the UT community about the “Make Orange Green” mission.

The program was formed in 2005 when campus committees and departments joined efforts to "promote and coordinate environmental stewardship activities at the University of Tennessee," according to the group’s mission statement.

Its members have completed several projects around campus, such as replacing inefficient light-fixtures, installing electric hand-dryers and placing recycling bins in convenient locations.

The next step is getting the entire campus involved. The "Make Orange Green" website suggests simple ways students can help.

Yet, the majority of students have been slow to catch on. Banners fly proudly to promote the effort, while fast-food wrappers and old newspapers litter the ground below.

"I've seen a lot of signs and things, but that's pretty much all I know about it," says senior Mike White.

Only time will tell if UT can become a shinning beacon of environmental stewardship.
