Corker vs. Ford in second debate

Republican nominee, Bob Corker, and Democratic nominee, Harold Ford, Jr., squared off Tuesday night in Chattanooga for the second debate in Tennessee’s race for the U.S. Senate.

Corker and Ford debated on education, health care, the large national debt, securing the Mexican border, high fuel costs, and abortion.

Their differences were clear early from the opening statements. Corker discussed his experiences living, working and being the mayor in Chattanooga. Ford focused on headlining issues such as North Korea and Iraq.

On the issue of border security, Ford quizzed one audience member when he asked, “Do you know that you owe the United States government $28,000?”

The nominees also strongly disagreed on the hiring of illegal aliens. Ford said, “There’s a big difference between my opponent and I on this issue as well. I’ve never hired an illegal alien. He has.”

The debate became most heated and personal when Corker questioned whether Ford’s father had lobbied the congressman.

Corker asked, “Why was it that within 60 days your dad became the registered lobbyist for Fannie Mae, to lobby you in Washington on that committee?”

When Ford responded, he said, “You leave my family out of this sir. This is between you and I; your ideas, your agenda, your platform versus mine.”

Tennessee's race for U.S. Senate is entering the final phase with less than four weeks until Election Day.
